Walking with confidence & expectancy. . .
We are The Larvins - Barrie & Karen: A Brit & a Yank.
We are newly retired from work and anxious to join the millions of lucky people who have been traveling the world. We have had some wonderful trips over the past three years, and are anxious to add more locations to our travel map.
Our "permanent" home is in beautiful Naples, FL and we love it, but our hearts and souls get restless so we go out our front door and enter the doors of strange countries, strange cities, and strangers. We try to stay behind those doors until we are no longer strangers, but welcomed friends.
My desire has been to travel since I was a young girl in South Dakota. I know - you've never met anyone from South Dakota before. And, no, it isn't close to Bismarck or Fargo. They are NORTH Dakota.! (I have heard those questions and comments since I left home many, many years ago!) It was remote and rural, but books took me to places that I could only dream about. I now have a Bucket List filled with destinations. I have stood in front of the Mona Lisa and at Stonehenge and cried because I could remember studying about them in a country schoolhouse. A kid in a candy store pretty much describes the way I feel when we are planning future trips.
Barrie, on the other hand, was born in London and traveled extensively in his life. Most of his trips were for business however; so he often did not have time to stop and smell the local aromas while visiting a country. The first time we were in Paris together, we walked & walked & walked, exploring that beautiful city. We put our lock on the bridge to seal our destiny together, we ate the most wonderful cassoulet at Lipp, and we went to my favorite place: Shakespeare and Company: a dingy little bookstore that has been called the most famous independent bookstore in the world. On the third day, Barrie said, "I've never seen Paris like this before". He is now as much in love with it as I am. He is no longer the jaded traveler!
Through a wonderful twist of fate & timing, we were brought together, found we had a lot in common, fell in love, got married and now, side-by-side we are exploring the world. We plan to spend quality time wherever we go so that we can meet the people and experience the local food, sights, smells & traditions.
In short, we want to "walk through Hope's doorway" and live like the locals for a time.
Note: This Blog will be written mostly by Karen, hence the first person references. (Barrie is the #1 proof-reader.)
